Inverted Totalitarianism

“The increasing power of the state and the declining power of institutions intended to control it has been in the making for some time. The party system is a notorious example. The Republicans have emerged as a unique phenomenon in American history of a fervently doctrinal party, zealous, ruthless, antidemocratic and boasting a near majority. As Republicans have become more ideologically intolerant, the Democrats have shrugged off the liberal label and their critical reform-minded constituencies to embrace centrism and footnote the end of ideology.” (Wolin 1).

This quote reflects the situation we’re facing today in the United States. Republicans have taken power over the United States.  They’re controlling USA with their beliefs and mandated laws. There’re not citizens or institutions that could prevent Republicans from controlling this nation. This is the only party in America history that shows little compassion for others. This’s a conservative and religious party which doesn’t consider homosexuality or lesbianism as right. Also, Republicans are considered as an energetic and devoted party that its only goal is to achieve their objectives. Some citizens dislike Republicans because of their rules and lack of compassion toward citizens.  On the other hand, Democrats are considered libertarian which allows homosexuality, hold different ideas and support immigrants.

This quote caught my attention because it reflects what’s happening today in the United States.  Donald Trump and the Republican party have taken power over USA. They discriminate Hispanic and immigrant people. Trump doesn’t care about the poor and immigrants. Some of the citizens that voted for him are regretful because of his attitudes and lack of consideration.  He’s considered intolerant, racism and selfish. He has brought violence and division in the USA.  This is a real quote that reflects what’s happening now. People are afraid of what’s going to happen in the future because of the power he and his party are overtaking.

The word totalitarian also called my attention because it reflects power over the nation, and relates to the problem we ‘re facing today in USA. It means taking control over the freedom of others. “Form of government that theoretically permits no individual freedom and that seeks to subordinate all aspects of individual life to the authority of the state” (Britannica 1).   In my opinion, the totalitarian word is correlated to the quote because Trump wants to oppress citizens with his mandated laws and lack of opportunities.
